The academic session 2015-2016 is significant for the University of Gour Banga. This year (2016) the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore has accredited (1st Cycle) the University with CGPA of 2.30 out of 4 and the University thus emerged as the first University in West Bengal established by the state Govt. in the present century to face the NAAC. The University also gained the 12B recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi this year.
Apart from completion of the set of central gymnasium and central computer centre, the work for the constructions of two (one each for boys and girls) state-of-the-art hostels and one language building have already been started. The University also completed the construction 18 ICT enabled smart classroom for various PG departments and several research laboratory for various academic departments by utilising the central Govt. fund under RUSA scheme. The University also successfully purchased a good number of computers, software, laboratory instruments and machineries under the above mentioned scheme. The University also provided the PG academic departments with seminar libraries.
The University hosted the annual session of the prestigious Indian History Congress in the last week of December of 2015. The session saw the gatherings of numerous luminaries in the field of historical research. Some of the faculty members of the University participated in the academic conferences in India and abroad, and presented their research papers in various conferences and symposia of International repute. Our faculty members also have bagged prestigious projects from the apex bodies like the DST, SERB, ICHR, ICPR, ICSSR and other organizations worth lakhs of rupees during 2016.
This year the University opened three new PG departments i.e. Law, Physiology, and Library & Information Science for the benefit of its students. The admission process to the PG and B. Ed courses are also done in complete online mode. The University again showed its excellence in result publishing as it published the U.G. Part III result within 19 days after the completion of the final examinations and thus became the first University in West Bengal to publish the of the U.G. Part III Examination. New affiliations to 33 B. Ed colleges and 1 general degree have also been given this year.
The last month of 2015 also witnessed the happening of the first convocation of the University where various degrees conferred to more or less eighty-five thousand. The University also conferred the D. Litt to Sri Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and Sri Subodh Sarkar, and D. Sc to Professor Arun Kumar Sharma and Professor Sandip K. Chakraborty in honoris causa. More than 300 degrees and medals in various disciplines including M.Com., M.Sc., M.A., B. A., B.Sc., BCA, LL.B., B.Com. etc. were awarded in this Convocation.
In 2016 the University also celebrated its 9th Foundation Day programme on February 19, and the Foundation Day lecture was given by sociologist Professor Swapan Kumar Bhattacharyya of Calcutta University. Many academicians and eminent personalities of Gour Banga participated in the celebrations.
So, it is a pleasure to bring out the Annual Report of the University of Gour Banga, Malda. The enclosed report gives the details of the Academic, Research and Faculty Development activities as well as the Infrastructure for the year 2015-16.
